Hector Valentine, sometimes called "Heck" by his intimates, was always a very large and commanding boy who excelled at sports and games but was given to fits of brooding and reclusive book-reading. His relations with his siblings are typically cool, maybe because he won so often, and cared so little for the hurt feelings of the loser. One or two siblings have gained either his trust or affection. As a teenager, he began to hang around with some common boys, the sons of soldiers and thieves, and was a lot happier around them. Now 22, he is the kind of cavalry officer that inspires admiration in common folks and the worship of veterans, his physical courage and tactical brilliance matched only by his fierce devotion to his men. He is, however, beginning to develop a reputation for ruthlessness, following a routine military action which some have called a massacre. Heck is tall and thick-necked, with dark hair and eyes. His colors are black and gold, his emblem is a black bull on a gold field, and he is Lord Commander of the King's Third Armored Chevaliers.
